Bio
Colin Corner is currently Principal Bass of the Rochester Philharmonic, following a 2-year apointment as section bass in the Minnesota Orchestra. Previously, Colin served as Associate Principal bass in the Vancouver Symphony and Assistant Principal and section bass in the Louisiana Philharmonic in New Orleans.
While in New Orleans, Colin discovered his other musical passion: jazz and composition. As an improvisor, Colin has played with numerous musicians in various styles, everything from avant-garde free-improvisation to Brazilian jazz. In Minnesota Colin performed his solo bass compositions for the American Composers' Forum Salon Series, and was invited to perform at their annual meeting in 2007. Colin was a founding member of the Jetsam Organic Ensemble, an innovative acoustic jazz quartet, as well as the modern jazz trio Blood Electric. Colin also plays regularly with the Brazilian jazz group Xibaba, led by pianist Tom Kehoe, and established the jazz bass and cello duo Pendulum with cellist Matt Knippel.
Colin has been a recipient of numerous awards, including 1st place in the 2003 International Society of Bassists Orchestral Competition, which led to a 1-week internship with the Detroit Symphony. He recieved 3rd place in the same competition in 2001. Colin also was a recipeint of the Interlochen Double Bass Class Studio Award in 1997, which has since been renamed the Colin Corner Bass Award in his honor. Colin was a graduate of the Interlochen Arts Academy and recieved his Bachelor's Degree from Indiana University, where he studied with Lawrence Hurst.
